General

All faculty and staff offices and laboratories of the Civil Engineering Department are in the Leo Engineering Building which is located within the Lower Campus of Manhattan College. The main entrance to this building is on Corlear Avenue between Van Cortlandt Park South (West 240th Street) and West 238th Street (there is no West 239th Street in the immediate area). Most Civil Engineering Department courses are also held in the Leo Engineering Building although some utilize specialized computer facilities located in the Research and Learning Center which is directly across Corlear Avenue from Leo.

Click here for an artistic rendition of the Manhattan College campus (the Leo Engineering Building is location No. 15, at the bottom of the map). Note that several useful landmarks for navigation (the elevated rapid-transit system to name the major one) are missing entirely from this map so it should be used with care by first-time visitors. General directions to the College can be found here but note the following:

  • Specific directions to the Lower Campus area are slightly different. One must get to the intersection of Broadway and Van Cortlandt Park (VCP) South. Note that VCP South is the same as West 240th Street. Note also that Interstate I-87 (the Major Deegan Expressway) has both north- and southbound exits onto VCP South (head westbound on VCP South from either exit). From the intersection of Broadway and VCP South (which is directly under the elevated rapid-transit tracks), head west on West 240th Street one short block then turn left (south) onto Corlear Avenue. The Leo Engineering Building will be on your right. If necessary, please ask whomever you are visiting for additional guidance as well as assistance with off-street parking (if needed) which is always restricted in College-owned lots.
  • The "Public Transportation" directions curiously omit the way that generations of Manhattan College students and others have gotten here, via the New York City rapid-transit (subway) system. Take the northbound No. 1 train only and get off at the 238th Street stop which is one stop before the end of the line. The rail line is elevated above the street at this point. Then walk one block west along West 238th Street from Broadway to Corlear Avenue, then one-half block north on Corlear to the main entrance of the Leo Engineering Building which will be on your left.

Research Institutes

In May 2001, the Manhattan College School of Engineering established a new and innovative research institute called the Center for Geotechnology (CGT). The CGT is under the overall jurisdiction of the Dean of Engineering because of its multidisciplinary, post-graduate goals in both geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering education and research. However, the CGT is under the direct administration and supervision of faculty from the Civil Engineering Department. Prof. John S. Horvath, Ph.D., P.E. of the Department is the Founder as well as first Director of the CGT. Prof. Anirban De, Ph.D., P.E. is the Assistant Director of the CGT.

Instructional and Research Laboratories

The Civil Engineering Department maintains a total of four separate laboratories that are used for both basic and advanced undergraduate instruction in the three broad categories of civil engineering materials:

  • fluids (gases and liquids),
  • particulates (soils) and
  • solids (concretes, metals, plastics, wood).

These facilities are also available for advanced graduate-level instruction as well as faculty research.
