Paper-reinforced MSE Wall: Freshman Engineering Project

Objectives

The object of this exercise was to introduce students to the concept of composite design and, specifically, to the use of reinforcements in earth systems.  The project also taught students teamwork, time management, and presentation skills.

Acknowledgments

This paper-reinforced MSE Wall project is based on the ASCE Geo-ChallengeIt was modified to meet the needs and abilities of freshman engineering students.

While planning our project, we received valuable suggestions from colleagues at other institutions with experience in the project: Dr. Mary Roth (Lafayette College), Dr. Barbara Luke (UNLV), Dr. David Elton (Auburn U.), and Dr. Eric Loehr (University of Missouri-Columbia).  Dr. Moujalli Hourani, Chairman of the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department at Manhattan College provided encouragement and support throughout the project.  Graduate assistants Sal Perfetto and Keith Eichner assisted with setting up and smooth running of the project.
