Who we are ...
Civil engineers use mathematics and the pure sciences of biology,
chemistry and physics as the bases for the applied engineering sciences of fluid, particulate
(soil) and solid mechanics. These engineering sciences in turn form the rational
framework for analyzing a wide
variety of applications involving environmental, geotechnical, structural, transportation and water resources
problems. Civil engineers are involved in both the design and construction of
facilities that affect all aspects of human life.
The civil engineering program at Manhattan College was founded in 1892
and has continued without interruption since then. It is the oldest engineering
degree program at the College. Over the years the program's curriculum has been
broadened to include environmental engineering and, most recently,
construction management to meet the changing needs of society. The Civil and
Environmental Engineering Department offers a broad,
traditional undergraduate curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Science in Civil
Engineering degree. Graduate study leading to a Master of Science in Civil
Engineering degree is available in the specialty areas of construction
management and environmental, geotechnical and
structural engineering.
The faculty of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department increasingly use the
sophisticated Blackboard™ (Bb) educational system in their
courses to complement traditional teaching and communication methods. Guests are
allowed to visit the College's Bb site and have access to many components
of the courses posted there. This is an especially useful tool for prospective
students as they can easily review course syllabi on line to see if a course
meets their educational needs. Click

The Manhattan College Civil and Environmental Engineering Department is also the administrative home of the
Manhattan College School of Engineering Center for Geotechnology
(CGT) which was established in 2001 to foster growth in the geotechnical and
geoenvironmental engineering specialty areas of civil engineering.
The CGT supports the efforts of the
United States Universities Council on Geotechnical Education and Research (USUCGER)
through the USUCGER membership of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department.
