GENERAL NEWS
Effective 1 July 2004, the Environmental Engineering Department ceased to exist as a separate administrative entity and its faculty,
staff and academic programs were brought back into the Civil Engineering Department after an absence of more than a decade. In recognition of
its enlarged and enhanced academic mission, the CE Department has been renamed the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department.
Dr. Moujalli Hourani, the former CE Department chairperson, is the chair of the
new combined department.
Due to the myriad facets of executing
this administrative change, it will take some time before all of the College's Internet webpages, catalogs, brochures, etc. reflect the new department
properly. However, work is already well along for effecting many exciting curriculum changes within the new department. This will include a
greater variety of undergraduate concentrations and elective courses as well as the strengthening of the required curriculum for all
undergraduates. There will also be new, formal Master-degree
programs of study in construction management and geoenvironmental engineering
(see the Academic Activities section below). These will complement the existing graduate
programs in environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering and structural engineering which are also undergoing modernization and
strengthening of their programs of study to meet the needs of the 21st century. As part of
this makeover, the former 'combined' program in
geotechnical and structural engineering has already been eliminated from the graduate program as it does not serve modern requirements that
design-oriented civil engineers concentrate in one area of study at the graduate level.
ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES
New Construction Management Graduate Program.
A formal graduate-degree program for a Master of Science in Civil Engineering with a concentration in construction management has officially
been launched effective with the 2004-2005 academic year and Fall 2004 semester that begins on 30 August 2004. A copy of the formal
announcement and schedule of new courses to be offered in the Fall 2004 semester can be downloaded
here.
Geoenvironmental Engineering Graduate Program.
Although a formal graduate-degree program in geoenvironmental engineering is still under development for a formal launch
at a future date, it is currently possible for a student to pursue a Master of
Science in Civil Engineering degree with a concentration in geoenvironmental engineering. Some have done and are doing so at
the present time. In addition, new courses that will eventually be part of this degree program are currently under development. Students
interested in obtaining a Master degree in geoenvironmental engineering should contact the
Civil and Environmental Engineering Department office.
