MISSION STATEMENT

The Mission of the Civil Engineering Program is to educate each of our students so when they graduate they are prepared to function professionally as responsible members of the global engineering community dedicated to life-long learning and collaborative practice, discovery, and sharing of knowledge.  The Program puts particular emphasis on introducing the student to the broad range of Civil Engineering disciplines.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

The Objectives of the Civil Engineering Program are:

  • To prepare students for either direct entrance into the Civil Engineering profession or graduate studies through exposure to the various Civil Engineering Disciplines.

  • To develop a student's knowledge of mathematics, basic science and engineering (engineering science and engineering design) through sequenced lecture courses, laboratory exposure, design courses, and related experiences in the Program.

  • To develop the student's ability to use computer software in an intelligent way

  • To develop the student's ability to perform open-ended engineering design and function in a multidisciplinary team environment.

  • To develop the student's oral, written and technically supported abilities to communicate effectively.

  • To graduate students who recognize the need for and have the ability to engage in life-long learning

  • To provide students with knowledge of professional and ethical responsibility, as well as the importance of working in a global environment

FOUR-YEAR PROGRAM

The curriculum for the first year is common to all branches of engineering.  In order to enable a student to test his or her interest in Civil Engineering, he or she takes designated courses from the Civil Engineering course offerings in their sophomore year.  The junior and senior years allow for concentrated studies in the areas of structural, environmental, geotechnic, transportation, and water resources engineering.  A representative four-year program is shown below.
