PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Kevin Farley is an Associate Professor and Co-Chair of the Environmental Engineering Department.  He received his bachelors and masters degrees from Manhattan College (1975, 1977) and his doctorate from MIT (1984).  Before returning to Manhattan College in 1995, Dr. Farley worked as  an Assistant and Associate Professor at Clemson University (1987-95) and as a Senior Engineer for Tetra Tech, Inc. (1984-87).

Dr. Farley’s teaching and research focuses on water quality modeling, and the fate and bioaccumulation of toxic chemicals in aquatic systems.  His teaching includes both undergraduate and graduate courses in surface water quality modeling, ecology, and toxic chemical modeling.  Dr. Farley has been the recipient of several “Outstanding Teacher” awards and is consistently ranked in the “Top Ten Teachers” in the School of Engineering.  His current research includes projects on the fate and bioaccumulation of PCBs in the Hudson River (sponsored by the Hudson River Foundation), the bioaccumulation of hydrophobic organic contaminants (sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), and the development of water-/sediment models and criteria for arsenic and chrome (sponsored by the National Institute of Environmental and Health Sciences).

Dr. Farley is currently serving on several national committees and review panels including: the National Research Council Committee on Remediation of PCB-Contaminated Sediments; the Model Evaluation Group for the Chesapeake Bay Program; the Lake Michigan Mass Balance Review Panel; and the Science and Technical Review Panel for PCBs in the Hudson River.  Dr. Farley has recently served as a water quality expert and consultant for the U.S. Department of Justice, the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, the American Geological Institute, and HydroQual, Inc.

His wife, Bea, is a teaching assistant at Grafflin Elementary School in Chappaqua.  His son Emmett and daughter Nora attend Pleasantville High School and Pleasantville Middle School, respectively.  His favorite recreational activities include swimming and coaching soccer.
