PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Scott Lowe earned his Civil Engineering degree from the University of Wollongong in New South Wales, Australia. He earned a Commonwealth Postgraduate Scholarship and attended the same institution to complete his PhD. While completing his PhD he was awarded the Peter Schmidt Memorial Award by the University as the outstanding graduate student in the Civil Engineering Department. His PhD work consisted of the experimental and numerical modeling of clarifiers at treatment plants.

After completing his PhD Dr Lowe spent three years working for the Boeing Company on a project administered through the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization. The focus of the project was the development of a global atmospheric model to examine the effects of aircraft emissions at high altitudes.

In January 1994, Dr Lowe joined the Environmental Engineering Department at Manhattan College. Since joining the Department he has taught classes in Air Quality, Air Quality Modeling, Fluids, Kinetics and Transport, and Mathematical Modeling. Additionally Dr Lowe also teaches the four semester project course called “The Company”.

In addition to teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level at Manhattan College, Dr Lowe also teaches professional courses and workshops. He is teaching an introductory course on the use of the EPA’s BASINS software called “Introduction to BASINS”. This course is being run through the American Society of Civil Engineers and is being held throughout the US. For more information see www.asce.org. Dr Lowe also teaches a course on Air Quality Models at The Wessex Institute of Technology in Southampton, England. This course is usually held in November. More information can be found at www.wessex.ac.uk. Dr Lowe also participates in the annual Summer Institute at Manhattan College which is held the first week in June.

Dr Lowe’s research activities have encompassed topics such as water quality modeling, air quality modeling, computational fluid dynamics and watershed modeling. He also actively engages in consulting work and has worked as a consultant to HydroQual, Inc., an environmental engineering consulting firm based in Mahwah, NJ, since 1994.
