Students win best paper awards at NYWEA

Environmental Engineering graduate student Jessica Levinson won 1st Place in the Best Student Paper Award at the 78th Annual Meeting of the New York Water Environment Association for her paper titled "Transport Characteristics of Biofilm/Porous Media Systems Under Constant head Conditions." The paper was co-authored by CEE undergraduate Chris Groth. Both Jessica and Chris are Donald J. O'Connor Student Fellows, and the paper described their research which was funded by the O'Connor Fellowship, the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy. Christine Esposito, Senior in Environmental Engineering, won 2nd Place in the Best Student Paper Award for her paper titled "Remobilization of Sediment-Bound Toxic Heavy Metals". Her paper was co-authored by undergraduate students Jiss Joseph and Marianna Kowalczyk, and Environmental Engineering Graduate Student Casey O'Mara.

50th anniversary of the Summer Institute

June 17, 2005:

The Summer Institute commemorated its 50th Anniversary with a special symposium involving four renowned Manhattan College Alumni. Wes Eckenfelder, Charlie O'Melia, Robert Thomann and Dominic Di Toro each gave talks on their environmental specialties. In addition, a plaque honoring Dominic Di Toro's upcoming induction into the National Academy of Engineering was unveiled at the Symposium. His induction marks the fifth environmental engineer from Manhattan College to gain induction into NAE. Photos.
