402. Mechanical Design I. A continuation of MECH 401. The design project in MECH 401 may be expanded or a model may be built and tested. Students may also start a new project in consultation with faculty. Group or individual design project and report. 3 Lectures (3 credits)

Prerequisite: MECH 401

Course Objectives:

The student will be able to:

• Design and build a useful product.

• Integrate professional, ethical and safety issues into a semester long “design and build” project.

• Present their design in a  professional manner.

Topics:  

The main purpose of this course is to produce a safe and cost-effective product delivered to the customer. The class is divided into design teams with 2-3 students per team. Each team, working with the instructor, selects a design project and works through the sequential phases from concept through construction and delivery of the product. Safety and ethical issues are dealt with at the outset and as they arise. Required are three written reports: proposal, progress report and final report, and at least three oral presentations, including a final presentation given to the group of customers. Ethics workshops are also carried out throughout the course of the semester with an emphasis on its integration into the student's projects.
