Henry Petroski graduated from Manhattan College with a Bachelor Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1963. He earned a Masters Degree in 1964 and the Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in 1968 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. 

Dr. Petroski taught at the University of Texas at Austin and was a member of the technical staff of Argonne National Laboratory.  He joined the faculty at Duke University in 1981. In addition to his teaching career, Dr. Petroski has written a number of books including "To Engineer is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design," "The Evolution of Useful Things," and "The Book on the Bookshelf." He is presently Aleksandar S. Vesic Professor of Civil Engineering and Professor of History and Chairman of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Duke University. 

In 1997 Dr. Petroski was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. He was cited for his books, articles, and lectures on engineering and the profession that have reached and influenced a wide range of audiences.
