Robert Thomann graduated from Manhattan College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering in 1956.  He received a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering from New York University in 1960 and went on to earn the Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography there in 1963.

Dr. Thomann began his professional career as a Sanitary Engineer with the U.S. Public Health Service, Division of Water Supply and Pollution Control while working on his Masters Degree. He served as Technical Director for the Delaware Estuary Comprehensive Study under the auspices of the Federal Water Pollution Control Administration, Department of the Interior, Philadelphia, PA.  Dr. Thomann has also served as Principal Consultant to and Partner in HydroQual, Inc. From 1966 to 1996 he was a Professor in the Environmental Engineering and Science Graduate Program at Manhattan College. He is currently Professor Emeritus of Environmental Engineering at Manhattan College.

In 1999 Dr. Thomann was elected to the National Academy of Engineering.  He was cited for significant contributions to the prediction and management of water quality in streams, estuaries, lakes, and oceans.
