Charles Thornton graduated from Manhattan College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering in 1961. He received a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering from New York University in 1963 and went on to earn the Ph.D. in Civil Engineering there in 1966. 

Dr. Thornton has served as a Trustee of Manhattan College.  Since the early 1970's, he has been a partner, with Richard Tomasetti, in Lev Zetlin Associates and in Thornton-Tomasetti Engineers. His nearly 40 years of experience with that firm have included involvement in the design and construction of projects worldwide. Representative of these projects are the New York Hospital, Chicago Stadium, Comiskey Park, the 95-story Petronas Twin Towers of Kuala Lumpur City Center, the 50-story Americas Tower in New York, the 65-story One Liberty Place in Philadelphia, and the 50-story Chifley Tower in Sidney, Australia.  Dr. Thornton serves as an Adjunct Professor in the School of Engineering at Manhattan College.  He is presently Chairman/Principal of LZA Group, Inc., Thorton-Tomasetti Engineers.

In 1997 Dr. Thornton was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. He was cited for significant contributions to the design of major structures worldwide.
